Finger Lakes, New York, USA

When Morten and Lisa started Ravines in 2001, they were the only winery in the Finger Lakes with a Winemaker holding a formal degree and training from Europe and a winery pursuing a traditional winemaking approach – making exclusively dry, vinifera wines. Ravines quickly became regarded as a top wine destination in the Eastern USA and has consistently gained national awards, noteworthy press, high scores and international accolades.

Morten, Danish by birth, grew up on his family’s estate winery in the Côtes de Provence region of France, a region that’s world famous for its food and wine “religion”. His parents owned and operated Domaine de Castel Roubine, a 170 acre vineyard and estate winery where Morten spent years honing his viticulture skills, and in the cellar, learning the traditional methods of fine, European winemaking. Castel Roubine was a culinary paradise, surrounded by vineyards, gardens, orchards, and wild herbs and Lisa spent most of her time training in the culinary arts after previously meeting Morten in their formative years.

After secondary school, Morten received an advanced degree in both Enology and Viticulture at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Agronomie in Montpellier, one of the world’s top winemaking schools, and then went to work for Chateau Cos d’Estournel, a world-renown “2nd Growth” winery in the Medóc region of Bordeaux. In the following years, he made wine at Cordier Estates in West Texas and then the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina. In 1998 he went to work as Chief Winemaker for Dr. Konstantin Frank Cellars, one of the pioneers of vinifera grape growing in the Finger Lakes, located on Keuka Lake.

Morten will tell you without exaggeration that the Finger Lakes is a truly unique wine region with extraordinary opportunities and challenges. Because of its cool-climate nature, vinifera grape growing is confined to a narrow band around each lake, which means it will always remain small in terms of wine production. Impressively, the Finger Lakes is the American wine region that, naturally and without fail, provides a firm acidic backbone for Ravines wines each year, along with bright, pure and intense aromatics that produce wines with intensity, distinctiveness and a sense of place.

New York, Ravines 2021 Blaufränkisch/Pinot Noir blend CERISE

A crowd favorite going back to the inaugural vintage in 2006 is our red wine, Cerise. Spiced plums, black cherries and rose petals, with a touch of cinnamon and pepper. Juicy with an acidic backbone. 100% estate fruit of Pinot Noir and Blaufränkisch from our estate vineyards on Seneca Lake: White Springs (Blaufrankisch) and 16 Falls Vineyards (Pinot Noir).

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada

Spearhead Winery is located on the benchlands of South East Kelowna. Our focus is on premium quality wine which we produce from grapes grown on our estate vineyard and from selected Okanagan Valley vineyards. The hand harvested grapes are sorted at the winery and fermented in small lots.

On our estate vineyard we grow Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling.  Approximately 80% of 15 acres of vines is comprised of Pinot Noir including four different Dijon clones, 2 California heritage clones and Pommard.  This combination of plantings enables our wine maker to select from the different characteristics exhibited by these clones in order to create a harmonious, complex Pinot Noir from our home vineyard.  We also draw from a number of other vineyards in the Okanagan including Golden Retreat in Summerland and Coyote Vineyard in West Kelowna.

Our vineyard and winemaking teams are led by Grant Stanley. A highly respected BC winemaker, Grant has been at the helm as our Winemaker/General Manager for a few years now and he has transformed our winemaking program.  His commitment to showcasing specific terroirs of the Central Okanagan Valley is evident in the ‘single vineyard’ program we have developed for our pinot noir bottlings.  These wines display the unique attributes of the Okanagan vineyards that they were sourced from. We also produce blended Pinot Noirs which combine the characteristics of different vineyards, including our benchmark Cuvee. We have extended this exclusive approach to winemaking to other varietals including our Chardonnay which is made from a single clone.

SpearHead Winery is lead by Winemaker & General Manager Grant Stanley.

2022 Spearhead Riesling

The nose displays jasmine and lime with a hint of crushed rock and flint. The palate opens with a blast of fresh lemon, crab apple, and mineral notes. Great tension and balance.

This Riesling is entirely hand-harvested. 50% of the fruit is whole bunch pressed, while the other 50% undergoes maceration and cold soaks on skins for 24 hours. This process provides complex fruit aromas and increased mouth texture. The settled juice is then fermented in a stainless steel tank.
