This vintage invites you in with rich, pronounced aromas of cassis, black cherry, bramble fruit and nutmeg. The palate with it’s well balanced, smooth tannins shows further development of the dark fruit with further blueberry and chocolate notes. Elegantly balanced with a rich texture, bright acidity and smooth texture. 38% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc, 20% Petit Verdot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec, and 2% Syrah.

Each vineyard block was individually hand picked and berry sorted. Blocks were then broken into small batches, cold soaked on their skins for four days and fermented for an additional 21 days on their skins in tank with twice daily pump overs. All batches are then barrel aged for 18 months in 30% new French oak. The barrels that were blended to create the Red Icon were chosen first for their specific attributes. For only the 2nd time, we have added Syrah to be blend. The 1st and only other time was 2009. The wine was blended prior to bottling, unfiltered.

Decanter Magazine - 93 Points "This wine (a 38% Merlot-dominant Bordeaux blend with 2% Syrah) is a thrilling mix of herbal black and blue berries, cherries and currants crushed under oak along with earthy tar and spice. John Schreiner - 94 Points "This is only the second time – the first was 2009 – that a touch of Syrah has been added to the blend. The wine begins with aromas of cassis and black cherry. These are echoed on the palate, along with notes of blueberry, spice and chocolate. This is an age-worthy wine; if you need to drink it now, decant it and let it open up to reveal layers of flavour." 

David Lawrason - 94 Points "Red Icon is a compilation of five estate-grown varieties, so in one sense it is the sum of what this Skaha Bench site can do - all the components considered, measured and compiled. And it works very well. It is still youthful and constrained but there is also elegance and ripeness. Reserved aromas of ripe raspberry/blackberry are nicely framed by subtle cedar, toast, fresh herbs and vanilla. Classic. It is full bodied yet streamlined with some heat and firm yet fine tannin. The length is excellent to outstanding. Best 2023 to 2030. Tasted June 2020."

Sara D'Amato - 94 Points "The 2017 Icon is a substantial blend of classic Bordelaise varieties. Unctuous with big, chewy tannins and notes of violets and licorice. Undeniably bold and still quite compact with a stacked column of flavours. The hot, dry summer of 2017 gave the wine its notable power but careful picking was surely responsible for the ensuing finesse. Beginning to come into its own but hold another year or two if you can. Best 2022-2027. Tasted June 2020"


Anthony Gismondi - 93 Points "Can 2017 be better than in 2016? I think so. From the less is more perspective, less power, less spice, and less intensity has allowed this Bordeaux blend to show a sense of elegance and depth I haven't seen before. More Euro than most anything but the best red blends in North America, it is aged for 18 months in 30 percent new oak. The mix is 38 percent merlot and 21 percent cabernet franc followed by 20/11/8/2 petit verdot, cabernet sauvignon, malbec, and syrah. Again the texture is measured and elegant. The syrah seems out of place, but alas, the final test in the bottle suggests it works. Not a lot of Meritage can match the elegance and depth here, but they should try."

Daenna Van Mulligen "Elegant, complex, supple. Rich chocolaty aromas are woven with cassis, blueberries and plums, vanilla, licorice, baking spices and coffee. It is juicy yet savoury, balanced and complex. Intensely flavoured and smoothly weighted it has a lengthy, smooth and thoughtful finish. Open now and decant, or hold for the next decade."
