2018 Clos Du Soleil Capella

VARIETAL: 85% Sauvignon Blanc, 15% Sémillon

REGION: Similkameen Valley, BC

ALCOHOL: 13.1%

PH: 3.17

Our flagship white wine is a classic Bordeaux blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. A wine of grace and elegance: light golden in the glass, displaying intense aromas of grapefruit, lemon curd and meadow grasses. The palate shows an array of flavours: lemon zest, ripe grapefruit, Anjour pear, tangerine and wisps of wood smoke all tied together with bright, crisp citrus acidity. On the palate the wine is full and rich with a softness resulting from sur-lie ageing. A lovely saline minerality strings it all together, through to the long finish. This is a seafood wine par-excellence, but roast chicken or herb-crusted pork would be excellent too. Enjoyable now, this is a wine which will develop an added sense of richness with age.

Each vineyard block was separately harvested, by hand, at peak maturity. The grapes were whole-cluster pressed, and then fermented entirely in barrel (65% French oak puncheons, 35% stainless steel barrels) with the majority undergoing only wild, spontaneous fermentation. One quarter of the barrels were also allowed to undergo wild malolactic fermentation. All lots were barrel aged for nine months, on the lees, with lees stirring. The final wine was created by blending together just the very best barrel lots, in order to create a wine of true complexity and elegance.

Deborah Podurgiel, Natalie MacLean Wine - From Clos du Soleil Winery in the Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, shines Capella, a fresh and vibrant white Meritage blend of 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Semillon aptly named after the brilliant Capella star prominent in the Northern Hemisphere on winter evenings.

Capella is Clos du Soleil's top tier white wine, complex and elegant with white grapefruit, lemon curd, fresh pear, soft orange citrus, smoky, mineral aromas on the nose; dry, medium-bodied, beautifully-balanced, creamy and mouth-filling with crisp, fresh acidity and a lingering grapefruit and mineral finish on the palate. Extremely moreish!

The Sauvignon Blanc wine grapes for this vintage were sourced from the Whispered Secret Vineyard and Blind Creek Vineyard in Keremeos with the Semillon wine grapes from Dhaliwal Bros Vineyard in Oliver.

Grapes were whole-clustered pressed, fermented in 65% French oak puncheons and 35% stainless steel tank, then barrel-aged for nine months on fine lees with regular batonnage. Tasted December 2020. - 92 Points
